Tow Truck Financing

Looking to finance a tow truck for your business? Whether you’re purchasing your first rollback, adding a wrecker to your fleet, or replacing an older truck, there may be financing options available.

I work with a variety of equipment financing lenders, and not all of them have the same credit, down payment, or time-in-business requirements.

Some programs are designed for established towing companies with strong credit, while others may consider borrowers with credit challenges, limited time in business, or previous financial difficulties.

The type of truck you’re purchasing, your credit history, your business experience, and how much money you have available for a down payment can all affect your financing options.

Let’s take a look at how tow truck financing works and what lenders typically consider.

What Types of Tow Trucks Can Be Financed?

There are several different types of tow trucks used in the towing and recovery industry, and financing may be available for both new and used equipment.

Some common examples include:

  • Rollback and flatbed tow trucks: Often used to transport passenger vehicles, motorcycles, and other equipment.
  • Wheel-lift tow trucks: Commonly used for vehicle repossessions, roadside assistance, and local towing.
  • Integrated wreckers: Designed for certain heavy-duty towing and recovery applications.
  • Heavy-duty wreckers: Used for larger commercial vehicles, buses, and trucks.
  • Rotator tow trucks: Specialized recovery equipment used for more complex jobs.
  • Medium-duty tow trucks: Used for a variety of commercial towing and recovery needs.

Financing availability depends on the truck’s age, mileage, condition, purchase price, and the lender’s equipment guidelines.

Some lenders are comfortable financing older equipment, while others have stricter requirements.

Can You Get Tow Truck Financing With Bad Credit?

Yes, it’s possible to finance a tow truck with bad credit.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that you need excellent credit to qualify for equipment financing.

While strong credit generally gives you access to more financing options and potentially better terms, it isn’t always a requirement.

I work with lenders that consider different types of credit situations, including borrowers who have experienced late payments, collections, or other financial setbacks.

Depending on the program, lenders may place additional emphasis on:

  • Your down payment
  • Time in business
  • Monthly business revenue
  • Previous experience in the towing industry
  • The type and value of the truck
  • Your overall credit history

For example, an established towing company with consistent revenue may have different options than someone purchasing their first truck with no operating history.

If you’ve already been turned down by a bank, that doesn’t necessarily mean every equipment lender will give you the same answer.

How Much Down Payment Do You Need for a Tow Truck?

The down payment required to finance a tow truck can vary considerably.

Some well-qualified businesses may be eligible for financing with little or no down payment, while borrowers with more challenging credit or newer businesses may need to contribute more.

There’s no single down payment percentage that applies to every tow truck loan.

Lenders typically consider your credit, business history, the equipment being purchased, and the overall strength of the transaction.

For example, someone with established business credit and a profitable towing operation may qualify under a different program than a startup borrower with limited credit history.

In some situations, offering a larger down payment can help strengthen an application.

However, a larger down payment doesn’t automatically guarantee approval.

My approach is to review the transaction first and determine which lender programs may be a realistic fit before giving you an estimate of the required down payment.

Tow trucks aren’t the only commercial vehicles where down payment requirements can vary significantly. I also explain how lenders evaluate down payments in my article on down payment requirements for semi truck loans.

Can You Finance a Tow Truck as a Startup Business?

Possibly.

Starting a towing business can involve a significant upfront investment, particularly when purchasing a rollback or heavy-duty wrecker.

Some equipment lenders offer startup financing programs, but the requirements are generally different from those for established businesses.

If you’re starting a towing company, lenders may consider:

  • Your personal credit history
  • Previous towing or transportation industry experience
  • Available down payment
  • The cost and type of tow truck
  • Your personal financial situation
  • Whether you have an established business entity
  • Any existing contracts or expected sources of revenue

Having prior experience in the towing industry may help demonstrate that you understand the business, but experience alone doesn’t guarantee financing.

Startup borrowers may also need to provide additional documentation or make a larger down payment.

If you’re planning to purchase your first truck, I’d recommend discussing your financing options before committing to the purchase.

Can You Finance a Used Tow Truck?

Yes. Used tow truck financing is available through certain equipment lenders.

Buying used equipment can be a practical way to reduce the upfront cost of starting or expanding a towing business.

However, not every lender finances the same types of used trucks.

A lender may review the model year, mileage, mechanical condition, equipment configuration, and estimated resale value.

For example, financing a newer rollback purchased from an established commercial truck dealer may be easier than financing an older, high-mileage wrecker from a private seller.

That doesn’t mean older equipment is automatically ineligible.

It simply means we need to match the truck and your financial situation with a lender that finances that type of equipment.

Can You Finance a Tow Truck From a Private Seller?

In some cases, yes.

You don’t always have to purchase a tow truck from a dealership to obtain financing.

Certain lenders allow equipment purchases from private sellers, although these transactions can require additional documentation.

Depending on the lender, you may need:

  • A copy of the truck’s title
  • The seller’s information
  • A bill of sale or purchase agreement
  • Equipment photos
  • The truck’s VIN, mileage, and specifications
  • An inspection or valuation

The lender may also have specific requirements for how the seller receives payment and how ownership is transferred.

If you’re looking at a tow truck being sold privately, it’s a good idea to confirm financing availability before providing a nonrefundable deposit.

What Credit Score Do You Need for Tow Truck Financing?

There isn’t one credit score requirement for every tow truck financing program.

Some lenders primarily work with borrowers who have strong personal and business credit, while others consider applications involving lower scores.

Credit score is important, but it’s only one part of the application.

Lenders may also review how you’ve handled previous equipment loans, your available cash, business revenue, existing obligations, and the value of the truck.

I’ve seen situations where a borrower has a reasonable credit score but doesn’t meet a lender’s other requirements.

I’ve also seen situations where a borrower with credit challenges may have options because other parts of the transaction are strong.

The key is understanding the entire financing picture rather than focusing on one number.

What if You’ve Had a Bankruptcy or Repossession?

A previous bankruptcy or equipment repossession can make financing more challenging, but it doesn’t necessarily mean financing is impossible.

The lender may want to know:

  • How long ago the bankruptcy or repossession occurred
  • Whether the bankruptcy has been discharged
  • Whether any deficiency balances remain
  • How you’ve managed your credit since the event
  • Whether you’ve successfully financed equipment afterward
  • How much down payment you have available

Some lenders have restrictions involving recent bankruptcies, open bankruptcies, or prior repossessions.

Others may consider the circumstances when the transaction meets their underwriting requirements.

It’s important to be upfront about these issues so we can focus on programs that may actually consider your application.

How Does Tow Truck Financing Work?

The process is usually fairly straightforward, although documentation and approval times vary by lender.

1. Tell Me About the Truck

We’ll start with the type of tow truck you’re looking to purchase, its approximate price, and whether it’s new or used.

If you’ve already found a truck, having the year, make, model, mileage, and seller information is helpful.

2. Review Your Financing Situation

I’ll ask about your credit, time in business, revenue, available down payment, and any previous equipment financing experience.

The goal is to determine which financing programs may be worth considering.

3. Submit an Application

Depending on the lender and requested financing amount, you may be able to start with a credit application.

Other transactions may require bank statements, financial statements, tax returns, or additional documentation.

4. Review Available Financing Terms

If a lender offers approval, we’ll review the required down payment, payment amount, financing term, fees, and other conditions.

5. Complete the Financing and Purchase

Once the lender’s conditions are satisfied and the transaction is finalized, the equipment can be purchased and delivered according to the lender’s funding and closing procedures.

Approval and funding timelines depend on the lender and transaction.

Why Work With an Equipment Finance Broker?

When you apply directly with one bank or finance company, you’re generally limited to that lender’s programs.

As an equipment finance broker, I work with different lenders that have different underwriting requirements.

That can be especially helpful when you’re purchasing specialized equipment like tow trucks, have less-than-perfect credit, or don’t meet a traditional bank’s requirements.

My goal isn’t to submit your application everywhere and hope something works.

It’s to understand your situation, identify lenders that may be a good fit, and explain the available financing options.
